Random real life post! A friend on housegroup mentioned that a steam train would be heading through Fareham the other day. Conveniently it was at lunchtime on a day I was working from home, so I popped out to find a good vantage point...

So a few months ago I went to visit [livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove in Cornwall for the weekend. I took the train - normally it's a fairly civilised journey and it's by far the most sensible option for a weekend trip to his - but this time there was more fail than usual...

[livejournal.com profile] boggyb 15:26: My train from Westbury is cancelled [due to a fire alarm in the signalling centre] - new eta 1944
[livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove 15:28: nice
[livejournal.com profile] boggyb 15:30: On the plus side, yay delay repay
[livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove 15:32: lol. i assume it isn't a real issue if they have an "upto 20mins". aka, if you know that, why not let them just stay
[livejournal.com profile] boggyb 15:33: Will let you know if I see smoke
[livejournal.com profile] boggyb 15:47: New eta 1928
[livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove 15:48: roger
[livejournal.com profile] boggyb 17:21: Am at Bristol Temple meads. New eta 1944
[livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove 17:25: k

Ultimately I was delayed 1 hour and 8 minutes, which fits into the "50% refund of a return ticket" delay repay category. I stuck a claim in because why not, and it was approved! GWR awarded me £8.43... for a 15-29 minute delay. Um.

There was a handy appeal button, so I clicked it and put in an appeal pointing out that I was delayed over an hour and giving my actual journey and reason for route ("the WSB to PLY train was cancelled and the National Rail app showed this alternative"). Squeezing all that into the tiny 250-character "Additional Appeal Details" box was a challenge but I managed to fit my actual journey in there as well.

And after waiting a week... my appeal was successful! They awarded me a full refund for a delay of 120 minutes or more. Err.

Because I'm me, I emailed GWR pointing out their mistake (and taking advantage of an email letting me type more than 250 characters).

That was over two months ago, and I got absolutely no response to the email. So... thanks for the unexpected 100% refund?

Last day of the holiday! This weekend was the Saltash Regatta and today there was a Saltash Churches Together service being held on the waterfront. I've never been to this part of Saltash before, or twigged quite how hilly Saltash is - a few years back I did go through a stroll along the high street, but that and the Tamar Bridge is a fair height above sea level.

I've yet to finish posting the last two Cornwall trips, but this one deserves uploading before I forget to. There was more spontaneousness than usual for myself and [livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove.

Time for another weekend trip to visit [livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove! The first day was taken up with train fail and little else, hence day 0. The train fail was an unexpected diversion via Bristol Temple Meads, due to my train from Westbury being cancelled (in fairness due to a fire alarm at Westbury signalling centre, so better than the usual excuse from British Rail). Since my train from Fareham was also delayed I missed a change at Bristol and didn't get into Plymouth until the evening. On the plus side, yay delay repay! Now I just need to convince GWR that I was delayed by an hour, not 15 minutes.

So I'm once again on a trip down to Cornwall to see [livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove, and this just happened...

*train starts moving*

*train judders to a halt*

PA: *bing bong* "One" "Two" "Three"... all the way up to thirty

Edit: someone's just come on the PA and explained - someone tried to leave the train as it was starting to move away from the platform.

I'm typing this post from a train in the middle of nowhere because I can. Yay on-train wifi! Not that it's that fast a connection - I seem to be getting all of 512kb/s out of it.

I can't believe I just typed that. It really isn't that long ago that 512k was a reasonable Internet speed - now it makes browsing painfully slow.

Anyway, so what all's been happening in the world of [livejournal.com profile] boggyb? Well, various odds and ends that I've been meaning to post but haven't got round to doing so - so here's a round-up to clear the backlog.

Last month was [livejournal.com profile] elemnar's birthday and we ended up going to Reigate for the day (parking in what The Gnu described as the worst car park ever). We followed a surprisingly interesting tour around Reigate that The Gnu had found, taking us through tunnels and moats and into castles and odd side streets. There's even a cave system that's occasionally open to visitors! We then went to Prezzo for lunch wherein amusingly The Gnu and I ordered different pizzas that intrigued us, then both of us spent the meal thinking that we preferred the look of each other's pizza. So perhaps next time we'll swap the order round?

After that we went to the real goal of the trip which was to sample the Monty Bojangles café and enjoy variations upon chocolate drinks (I had a chocolate milkshake, they had hot chocolates - and our drinks were all very nice!). Finally as we had a bit of time left we wandered towards the park in search of a few geocaches. The first one we found was a literal letterbox cache mounted in plain sight of everyone (it even had a sign saying "Geocache" and everything!). The next few were less successful - we found 3 or 4 in the woods, of which most were damaged or missing parts. Shame, really, as they were rather inventive caches - one was a bird feeder, another was a box hidden in a log complete with a very large 'X' to mark the spot.

Hmm, my wifi has dropped down to 128kb/s. That 15MB "fast Internet" cap didn't last long!

Later on in September was the parents' anniversary which we all celebrated as this year is a significant number. The parents had been mulling over various plans and ideas but in the end went for a simple family celebration mainly consisting of lots of board games at which [livejournal.com profile] allegramente demolished us all. We played two full rounds of Mahjong which [livejournal.com profile] allegramente ended up winning overall with a couple of high-scoring hands (it's all about the doubles). Later on we moved on to the next scenario in our ongoing Settlers of Catan: Seafarers campaign (Through the Desert, I think) and [livejournal.com profile] allegramente once again pulled a win out, this time through a strong military (i.e. lots of Knight cards) which defeated my expansionist approach. Finally we came to Ankh-Morpork - this time [livejournal.com profile] allegramente won the first round fair and square (possibly as one of the Lords?), and in the second game conspired with the others to pull off a win as Vimes while destroying all my buildings and assassinating all my minions. I think that was the first game that ended with one of us (me!) having nothing on the board at all!

Overheard at Taunton:

Punter 1: "Excuse me, I was booked in that seat"
Punter 2: "Oh, so was I"
Punter 1: "...twat" *stomps off*

Charming.

As it happens I'm in someone's seat, but given that this seat was booked from London Paddington and yet has been empty since Westbury I doubt the real occupant is about to turn up.

What else... car check time! It's been a while since I've blogged about it, though I have been doing the monthly checks and keeping everything topped up. October is MOT/service month as well so I need to arrange all that, along with a few other things - the rear shocks were flagged for upcoming replacement at the previous service and I still haven't got round to getting the exhaust tightened (that's the one which Halford's replaced over a year ago - they apparently didn't do a good job of fitting the new one!). Plus there's the ongoing power steering puzzle though that said, it has been more reliable over the past year.

As to the tyres, well the chap from Kwikfit turned up, checked the tread depth on all of them, and commented that there was loads of tread left (3/4mm on the fronts, 5/6mm on the rear) so they didn't need replacing after all. Except for the punctured rear, and since none of the others are new he suggested replacing the most worn tyre on the other side and moving that to the same axle. So in the end he replaced OSR and NSF, and swapped NSF with NSR giving me two new Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance tyres on the rear and a pair of reasonably evenly-worn boots on the front. And arranged a refund of the unused tyres which was nice. Full marks to Kwikfit mobile!

Anyway, enough rambling for now. Onwards to Cornwall!

Train drama

It's rare on the trains I normally catch, but occasionally there's a spot of drama.

This time it was someone standing at the end of the carriage with their music turned up far too loud so that everyone else can hear the "boom-tish... boom-tish... boom-tish" of overpowered earphones. Someone wandered down and quietly asked them to turn their music down (so quietly that I couldn't hear what she said - protip: if your music is louder than someone's voice, then turn it down), at which point the person with the music exploded with "Just leave me alone! No-one else is complaining, the guard didn't complain and he was closer to me than you are, just leave me along!".

Bear in mind this is Britain, so a lack of complaints doesn't imply that nobody minds. There's a certain element of minding your own business when it comes to trains - witness the tube at rush hour, where despite being packed in like sardines no-one complains about the person next to them.

Anyway, she eventually gave up asking, and a few minutes later the guard turned up (I don't know how the guard got involved or why), at which point the guy with the music started accusing the guard of being racist.

Sigh. Because of course it's race that's the reason behind everything, not playing your music loudly or being annoying.

Oh dear, he's still here complaining to the guard about people complaining about his music and not showing respect and discriminating against him.

So I was idly playing with trains and ideas for random days out, and put in here to Battle (for Battle Abbey) as a route. It takes a little over 3 hours including 36 minutes spent waiting for changes, has the 2 changes that are required (Brighton and St Leonard's Warrior Square), and a day return costs £15.

I stuck in another outing I was thinking of: Poole (for Brownsea Island), which is about half as far away as Battle. As it's much closer it only takes 1 hour 20 including a 10 minute change at Southampton Central. However a day return for this costs £20.10.

It gets even more absurd if I look at a trip to, say, London. There's a handful of possible routes: I can take a Southern train via Horsham which takes a smidgen over 2 hours, or a South West train via Winchester or Guildford which is around 20 minutes faster. The one using just Southern trains costs £22.10. The South West trains route costs £38.30.

It's summer, right? Not spring?

So why did I see at least a dozen rabbits today?

I spent the quarter hour waiting for the train at Lewes watching a pair of rabbits bounce around one of the lines (the one leading to the non-existant platform 0), and then from the train I saw a field full of 'em.

Rather tame too - they didn't even blink as a train went past.
