Today's surprise is a UK government mobile phone alert telling everyone to stop lighting disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators, or fireworks! Which came in as I was in a friends' shiny new car and confused us all no end as we all thought the alert noise was the car complaining about something or other.

On the one hand, yes the UK is a tinderbox, yes there are several major house-destroying fires, and yes the New Forest is still on fire. On the other hand... I'm not convinced that banning disposable BBQs needed the OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING siren. And neither appears to be the local fire brigade who've posted on FB saying please don't phone 999 just because your neighbour is having a BBQ.

Bag 13, and normal well-organised service resumes. This one's just filling in the sides and and top of the tree.

torkell: (Ocarina of Time)
Finally, the tree's face is complete.

And a few random trunks/branches? They're not connected to anything yet.

torkell: (Ocarina of Time)
Next up, a curious contraption and a totally-not-ominous-at-all spiderweb...

torkell: (Ocarina of Time)
The face is starting to take shape...

Decision made - as grand as the Breath of the Wild model is, for me Ocarina of Time is possibly my favourite Zelda game (it's a toss-up between that and Twilight Princess). The downside is this is the B-model, as shown by the instructions giving up on one bag at a time and asking for bags 10, 14 and 23 all at once!

First up is adding some roots and the door.

( It even opens! )
torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
Bag 9 for a change is not more tree but all the plants, including more Breath of the Wild plants and mushrooms.

And now I have a decision to make...

So far I'm resisting the temptation to buy a second kit and just build both...
torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
Bag 8 turns into yet more tree. How tall is this going to end up?

torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
Bag 7! And it's time to start the first of many layers of the Deku Tree...

Small hidden detail: a couple of bits of greenery tucked away

torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
I'm still building it, just terrible at actually blogging as usual :)

Bag 6 completes the frame for the base. I think it'll fit on top of my bookcase...

torkell: (Tall ships (porthole))
It is Too Hot here - the hottest temperature in June ever recorded in the UK (36.1 °C) was recorded in Gosport just down the road from me - so today housegroup decided on beach housegroup! As, apparently, did the entirety of Fareham as Lee-on-Solent was packed, but we managed to find a spot and enjoyed fish'n'chips and generally nattered for a few hours. It was almost a shame to leave in the evening, it's cooler there than it is back at my flat.

Bag 5! Something I've noticed with recent kits is Lego now tries to colour-code different size pieces. Here the 2x4's are white, 2x6's are green, and 2x8's are beige.

I knew this was going to be one of the larger sets, but I wasn't quite prepared for how big this will be. There's still half the base to go!
torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
The Master Sword.

If you look carefully there's even a little triforce detail!

I'm now wondering which Master Sword this is - it looks more like Breath of the Wild (or Skyward Sword) than Ocarina of Time, though both those should have a gilded diamond rather than blue gem in the crossguard.
torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
Bag 4! After three different incarnations of Link, it's time for Breath of the Wild Zelda to appear with the Sheikah Slate:

And after a bit of building, it's Hestu! With teeny tiny maracas that even rattle if you shake them!

Random Lego trivia: the maraca handles are T-junctions from Lego pneumatics.
torkell: (Breath of the Wild)
Bag 3! And we now have Breath of the Wild Link, and the start of the Great Deku Tree's grove where the pedestal for the Master Sword will be.

The yellow and orange domes and the pink flowers in the background represent mushrooms and radishes from Breath of the Wild - there's lots of little details in this set. Dotted around are even a few silent princess flowers.

torkell: (Ocarina of Time)
Bag 2! Link's treehouse is complete and even has a treasure chest.

Along with an adult Ocarina of Time Link minifig and a teeny tiny ocarina. And of course as soon as I saw that I remembered the jingle from when you learn a new ocarina song 🎶.

torkell: (Ocarina of Time)
So when I said I spent a fair bit of money on Lego recently...

Yes, that's the Lego Great Deku Tree kit! It's been on my "ooh, shiny!" list ever since it came out, and I found out that Lego are discontinuing it - so I went and got it while I still could. Consider it a late birthday present to myself 😅.

Anyway, onwards with the building! I can see this kit is going to take some time...

Ocarina of Time young Link, surveying the contents of bag 1 (of about 20!). Did I mention the bags contain more bags? Lego's a lot more organised than it used to be.

This becomes the bottom floor of Link's treehouse complete with Navi! *hums Kokiri Forest theme*

I may have spent a fair bit of money on Lego recently...

A few christmases ago, [profile] pleaseremove gifted me a Lego Chrysanthemum.

Light My Bricks do a light-up kit for it which looks very shiny (and expensive!), and as work gave me a pay rise recently I decided to treat myself to it. I wasn't quite prepared for how small the pieces are!

Anyway an hour or so of rebuilding and fiddling later and I have this...

It puts me in mind of something out of Myst, or perhaps a fire fruit from Tears of the Kingdom (or as [profile] pleaseremove suggested a Mario fire flower).

A post! Well, it's Eurovision time again... except this isn't the Eurovision post because I haven't watched it yet. Instead I was here...

I'll give you another hint...

Yes, I went to see Steeleye Span perform in Portsmouth! I've always liked their music - I nearly went to see them in Fareham a couple of years ago but didn't manage to make it. A while back I found out they were playing in Portsmouth and realised that I could go - so I did! 'Twas an excellent night with a mix of old a new songs, some of which I recognised and some that were new to me (I really ought to get some of their newer albums).

On Longbone: "This next song is about a giant who kills everyone, including the king who you might have thought gets away with it"

"Anything before the millennium is now traditional" (they've been around a long time)

On Tam Lin: "These aren't your nice Victorian faeries, these are heavy metal ballad faeries" (the Queen of the Faeries is quite the sore loser!)

On Jack Hall: "...so they eventually caught him and sentenced him to death for stealing a loaf of bread"

On All Around My Hat: "We'll play it but you have to sing the bloody thing!" (we did!)

It's been a while since I've filled in one of these...

What did you do in 2025 that you'd never done before?
Several things but to pick just three: visited Ireland (for real, not merely passing through), went to New Wine, and jury service. I was selected on the first day for a case which was supposed to last maybe 2 weeks... and took 3 and a half as things happened.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not this year.

Did anyone close to you die?
Sadly yes - my grandfather passed away at the start of the year having reached the grand old age of 95, and then in August a close friend at church unexpectedly died.

Which countries did you visit?
Ireland!

What would you like to have in 2026 that you lacked in 2025?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What dates from 2025 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Several, but I'll go for seeing Rend Collective in Southampton, in mid September. There was something wonderful, dare I say spiritual, when the band sang "Bless the Lord..." and the entire audience responded with "O my soul~~". The entire night was incredible but that moment was the highlight for me.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Ireland!

What was your biggest failure?
Still haven't got round to buying a house yet.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not really, no.

What was the best thing you bought?
Well, I didn't buy it myself (the landlord did) but having a washer-dryer is nice. The washing machine failed earlier this year - the drum motor packed up (most likely just ran out of brushes, it was 15+ years old) and my landlord opted to replace rather than repair so I cheekily asked if I could upgrade to a washer-dryer and he did so!

Whose behaviour merited celebration?
I'll pick the court usher for the trial I was on the jury for. We had the best court usher.

Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
A certain person in the trial. Though there were also some hilarious moments.

Where did most of your money go?
The usual combination of rent, bills, HMRC.

What were you really, really, really excited about?
Ireland!

What song will always remind you of 2025?
Matt Redman - 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder?

About the same.

b) Bigger or smaller?
About the same.

c) Richer or poorer?
The housing deposit is still growing...

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Visiting friends - what with one thing and another, I never did manage a trip to Craig's this year.

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastination, as always.

How did you spend Christmas?
With my sister - this year we went for a COOK turkey roast again. After lunch we then visited friends for board games (Muffin Time, Imploding Kittens, Super Mario Power Up card game).

What was your favourite month of 2025?
September, for both Ireland and Rend Collective.

What was your favourite TV programme?
I didn't watch all that much TV over the past year, so nothing comes to mind.

How did you see in the New Year?
Just me this year, there were plans for New Year's board games but those didn't pan out.

Do you dislike anyone now that you didn't this time last year?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What was the best book you read?
The Invisible Library, by Genevieve Cogman.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Interstellar soundtrack, which I found via Anna Lapwood covers (also an artist worth following). Have a listen to Tick Tock with good speakers (or earphones) and crank the volume up.

What did you want and get?
Probably several shiny things. And chocolate. Can't forget chocolate.

What did you want and not get?
A Switch 2 - though to be fair I didn't put it on my wishlist. It's going to be a present-to-myself for completing Invisalign which is taking a little longer than planned. Treatment was going to end November, but at that appointment my orthodontist and I discussed it and decided to see if we can fine tune a couple of teeth (which is easier to do before moving to a retainer). I suppose I have only myself to blame for the delay :)

What was your favourite film of this year?
I didn't go to the cinema at all this year - I meant to go and see Tron: Ares but failed to do so! That said, my housegroup did a study based on Casablanca and that film is excellent - it's got so many great lines in it. Seriously, go and watch it.

What did you do on your birthday?
Can't remember. It probably involved cake and chocolate :)

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
The Ireland trip was far too short - flew out Friday, returned Sunday (still managed to fit in loads - to name a few Killoskehane Castle, the Rock of Cashel, a hurling match). I must visit again.

What kept you sane?
Family, friends, housegroup, and a well-stocked MP3 player.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy/respect the most?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What political issue stirred you the most?
The erosion of LGBT+ rights. LGBT+ rights are human rights, why are we even having this discussion?

Who did you miss?
The aforementioned friend who passed away.

Who was the best new person you met?
New friends - V in housegroup and her partner B.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2025.
Don't be worried about jury service - it was genuinely fascinating being on it, and the judge explained everything. It helped that we all got on together in the jury.
The advocate also made a very important point - "it's not a popularity contest". We are to try the case purely on the evidence and testimony in front of us, and I believe we achieved that.

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
It's not a song lyric, but I found this verse from Ephesians very reassuring during jury service:
So put on God's armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.
So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight round your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate,
and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace.
At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One.
And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.

(Ephesians 6:13-17, GNB)
Oddly, in the run-up to jury service two entirely separate church events picked that verse. The Lord moves in mysterious ways.
