Well, people have been pestering me for a blog post - so here, have another round of Name that Song!

The rules are simple:
Step 1: Put your music player on random
Step 2: Post the first few lines from the first bunch of songs with lyrics that play, no matter how embarrassing the song
Step 3: Let everyone guess what song and artist/composer/work the lines come from
Step 4: Post the answers in a few days
Step 5: And last but not least, no cheating with Google!

The lyrics! )

Filler, I know, but hey at least I'm posting the answers in a reasonable amount of time!

Anyway, it's time for the answers to round 10 of Name That Song! There were no comments on LiveJournal (which I was half-expecting), but I cross-posted the same quiz to Facebook and got some surprising results there. Turns out a few songs I thought were originals are actually covers!

The answers! )

Let's see... there were a lot of mainstream songs in there, but my music player also threw up a few more random entries. Songs for Phillip is incredibly obscure (I'm not sure if it was ever sold outside of Horsham), and I wouldn't have thought many people will know the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack. And of course there's an Irish entry from Clannad in there to mix things up.

The high score over on Facebook was 10 tracks right (artist or album or title) - did anyone here do better?

Somehow it's been a few years since I last did the classic Name That Song meme...

The rules are simple:
Step 1: Put your music player on random.
Step 2: Post the first few lines from the first bunch of songs with lyrics that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone guess what song and artist/composer/work the lines come from.
Step 4: Post the answers in a few days
Step 5: And most importantly, no cheating by using Google :P

The lyrics! )

It's November, which means it's once again time for NaBloPoMo! And time for NaNoWriMo, which one year I might actually attempt.

This year I'll open by finally posting the answers to a Name That Game I posted back in March. This one seems to have stumped everyone - either that, or the usual commenters missed the post or have drifted off to other blogs. Anyway, I'll end the suspense and reveal the source of all the quotes now...

  1. Believe in your strengths... Believe...
Happy Mask Salesman, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  2. Science Team believes the Metroids can be trained. After several cycles of trying, I believe Science Team has vapor for brains.
Space Pirate computer, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
  3. A true gentlemen leaves no puzzle unsolved.
    Hershel Layton, Professor Layton
  4. Farewell, my shadow, you who stand at the end of the path I chose not to follow. I wanted my own world, so I don't regret my choice. I would make the same choice all over again. I will continue to choose this path!
    Lloyd, Tales of Symphonia
  5. There's also a chance, if all goes well, that I might be able to get you back to the place that you came from.
    Atrus, Riven
  6. Faker? I think you're the fake around here. You're comparing yourself to me? Ha. You're not even good enough to be my fake.
I'll make you eat those words!
Shadow and Sonic, Sonic Adventure 2
  7. The Great Mizuti never lies nor tricks. Maybe only sometimes. Rarely. Once in a blue moon.
Mizuti, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
  8. The wind fish in name only, for it is neither.
Owl statue, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  9. Master, that synthetic life-form... There is a 99% chance that it was the pirate described by the captain. I can't help but admire the tenacity it has displayed in staying alive and functional all these years.
Fi, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  10. Lightning brings the cactus pain.
    Now it all begins again.
    Gurdy, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
  11. I am Blockhead! I guard this place so that all shall pass! Er, wait... I mean, none shall pass!
    Blockhead, Ōkami
  12. Agents are... GO!
    Commander Kahn, Elite Beat Agents
  13. Never give up. Trust your instincts!
    James McCloud, Starfox 64
  14. Did you just do what I think you did!? God damnit girl, I just spilt my joe all over the keyboard!
    Mercury, Mirror's Edge
  15. I'll be waiting for you-- every day, in front of Hachiko... till you come back.
Shiki Misaki, The World Ends with You

Perhaps I'll stick with song lyrics for these quizzes?

I had an ulterior motive when I posted the answers to Guess the Book yesterday... because I've put together another round of Guess the Movie! I quite enjoy putting these together and picking out the various quotes - some of them are fairly plain, some are downright silly, and some are deeply meaningful.

Guess the Movie Meme, round 6!

To recap, the rules are:

  1. Pick some of your favourite films.
  2. Find a quote from each film.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess, with comments screened so everyone gets a chance.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it.
  5. Update with the answers in a week or two.
  6. No searching IMDB for the answers.

Onwards and upwards!

  1. My history’s a little hazy Cassius, but shouldn’t the Barbarians lose the battle of Carthage?
  2. You're not invulnerable. I can repair your body, but I can't protect your mind.
  3. Gondor calls for aid!
    And Rohan will answer.
Half-guessed by [livejournal.com profile] olego (right series, wrong film)
  4. I feel lighter. Maybe I lost some weight. All that dilly dallying.
  5. It's a trap!

  6. Well, get ready for a 800-foot statue of Pac-Man with Skeletor and Heather Locklear...

  8. It's a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team. And that means you do everything I say.
  9. I can teach you to fight with the Green Destiny, but first you must learn to hold it in stillness.
  10. Don't touch that! It's my lunch.

You've had your bonus week and so it's time I posted the answers to round 3 of Guess the Book.

  1. Three million cheers!
Nancy Blackett, Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
  2. I wish you could be happy.
A perilous wish, but some good may come of it.
Jane and the leader of the village women, Greenwitch by Susan Cooper
  3. There's no use trying, one can't believe impossible things.

  7. That actually worked? Interesting. My high priest didn't think the squirrel's brain would be capable of following such complicated Commands.
Oh. I mean "Whoops. It completely misunderstood me. Stupid squirrel."
Lightsong the Brave, Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
  8. You have been told to mind you manners, Page Nealan. I will have an apology for your insolence.
An apology for general insolence, your lordship, or some particular offense?
Lord Wyldon and Neal, First Test by Tamora Pierce
  9. And did the mouse squeak under your pillow, and the china dogs bark?
Mrs. Oldknow, The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy M. Boston
  10. He’s wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.
Mr. Beaver, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis
And the winner is... well, there is no winner as apparently this quiz defeated everyone. Or perhaps audience participation is merely down on past years?

I really shouldn't be putting a quiz together at Nik o'clock, but inspiration has struck. So, it's time for...

And the winner is... [livejournal.com profile] pleaseremove, for being the only person to guess any webcomics! Does that mean no-one else is following these? Perhaps I should stick to Name that Song or Guess the Movie.

torkell: (Default)

And now for something entirely different! Yes, it's another name-that-whatever quiz, and today's theme is... webcomics!

To be honest I've no idea if anyone else on my friends list still reads any webcomics (or followed them in the first place)... but I'm sure I'll find out. Anyway, this more-or-less follows the usual rules (except I'm not striking out guessed entries because that makes them hard to read):

  1. Pick some of your favourite webcomics.
  2. Find a quote from each webcomics.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed.
  5. Screen comments and wait a few days (preferably not months) before posting the answers to give everyone a chance at guessing.
  6. Oh, and no Googling! Or Binging, or using any other search engine.

Bring on the quotes!

  1. Can't sleep. Future will eat me.
  2. I'm with the Vorstellen Police, and before you do or say anything you might regret. I direct your attention to the badge and the gun.
  3. Really, Hepzibah? Losing your hold on me over hair?
  4. Daryl? With a grenade? Is there video? Please tell me somebody got some video.

And now, the long-awaited answers for last year's Name that Game (seriously, I posted the original back in July! I'll have to start setting reminders for these things...)

No, you will never touch them. Their memories burn too brightly for you!
Raem and Lady Mio, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
    Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] elemnar

And, as always, the scoreboard:

[livejournal.com profile] crschmidt: 1 point
[livejournal.com profile] elemnar: 12 points

To be fair [livejournal.com profile] elemnar does have an unfair advantage, given that a lot of those games we both have played... so congratulations to you both, and feel free to carve up the Internet between yourselves as a joint prize!

Enough worrying about speed cameras - I can't do anything now except wait and see if a letter arrives.

Anyway, it's time for something completely different. Or not so different, as I'm still in a mood for quizzes. Specifically, Name that Game!

As usual, the rules (though you should all know these by now):

  1. Pick some of your favourite games.
  2. Find a quote from each game.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed.
  5. Wait a few days (preferably not months) before posting the answers to give everyone a chance at guessing.
  6. Those who search TV Tropes will have their internet privileges revoked.

The real reason for finally posting the answers is because it's time for another "Guess the Thing" meme! This time, it's Guess the Book!

But before I continue, let me remind you of the rules:

  1. Pick some of your favourite books.
  2. Find a quote from each book.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed.
  5. Wait a few days (preferably not months) before posting the answers to give everyone a chance at guessing.
  6. Those who Google or search their Kindle for the answers will be fed to the Jabberwock.

Commentators, ready your library cards!

Let's see if I can poke some life into LJ...

Edit: corrected quote #9

I'm bored. That means it's time for a meme! And today's meme is... (spins the wheel of memeage) ...Guess the Movie!

As always with these things, we must first go over the rules:

  1. Pick 15 of your favourite movies.
  2. Find a quote from each movie.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
  5. Those who Google for the answers will be snarked at.

While it's tempting to save this lot until next years NaBloPoMo, to do so would be epic levels of cheating beyond what [livejournal.com profile] talismancer managed this year. Especially as not only is this a meme, but I actually wrote this post back on the 28th. So rather than let all that work go to waste here it is, the ninth round of Name that Song!

Do I really need to tell you the rules:
Step 1: Put your media player on random.
Step 2: Post the first few lines from the first 30 songs with lyrics that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone guess what song and artist/composer/work the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly. Wait a few days before posting the answers to give everyone a chance.
Using a search engine is, as is traditional, punished by snark.

My music player worries me sometimes... )

I'll try to post the answers this year!
