End of the Year meme 2018 )
torkell: (Default)
I'm not doing at all well at posting this meme in the correct year, am I? Anyway, have a rather-delayed end of the year 2017 post!

What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?

Visited the Netherlands! It's something of a bittersweet memory as the family went on a overnight trip to scatter Oma's ashes on a beach in Ijmuiden, where she grew up, and we only had enough time for a little sight-seeing. But all in all it was a fun trip, and it was good to meet with more of the extended family.

I also had the dubious honour of being made redundant, along with everyone else in the team I was in - that's what the saga alluded to in various posts was. Suffice to say there's a correct way to handle such things, and then there's the way $COMPANY-1 chose to handle it...

Went on a Go Ape course! I wasn't quite sure how I'd find it, but it turned out to be great fun.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I've no idea as I'm writing this post a year later than I should have, so I'll claim "yes" and "maybe".

Did anyone close to you give birth?

If I've got the year right, this was when a friend in housegroup gave birth to her second daughter.

Did anyone close to you die?

A friend's mum passed away this year.

Which countries did you visit?

For a change I actually travelled outside the UK, and visited the Netherlands.

What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?

Buying a house! That didn't happen in 2017 due to redundancy, but in 2018 I may have managed to make some progress on this...

What dates from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

The Netherlands trip - as it happened, it was over my birthday weekend so it's an easy one to remember.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?

A toss-up between finding a new job within a month of leaving my previous one, and managing to pay off my student loan.

What was your biggest failure?

Pass - there was probably something hilarious.

Did you suffer illness or injury?

Not especially.

What was the best thing you bought?

A shiny new Nintendo Switch, with Breath of the Wild!

Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Housegroup for being totally awesome.

Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

$COMPANY-1.

Honorary mention to DPD for trying to deliver the Nintendo Switch to the wrong house, on the wrong street. That level of fail is special.

Where did most of your money go?

Taxman, landlord, and car. In 2017 the Alfa wanted new shock absorbers which turned out to be surprisingly pricey.

What were you really, really, really excited about?

Breath of the Wild! Yes, I am a Zelda fanboy.

What song will always remind you of 2017?

Globus' Doomsday, because of the crash of thunder that happened as I was listening to it, perfectly timed with the beat of the song.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder?

About the same.

b) Bigger or smaller?

About the same.

c) Richer or poorer?

Richer - one side-effect of the redundancy was a redundancy payout and a nice pay rise from the new job.

What do you wish you'd done more of?

Exploring, as always.

What do you wish you'd done less of?

Procrastination, as always.

How did you spend Christmas?

With family - I think Opa came round for the Christmas day meal?

What was your favourite month of 2017?

Dunno about favourite but April was certainly an interesting month...

What was your favourite TV programme?

A toss-up between the Robot Wars reboot and the Crystal Maze reboot.

How did you see in the New Year?

If I remember rightly, the family first went round to Opa's flat for afternoon/evening nibbles. Afterwards we left Opa and met up with the Poons to see the new year itself in. Knowing the Poons, there was probably silly party games and plenty of food.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Let's just say that certain people involved with the saga would not be candidates for my Christmas card list...

What was the best book you read?

Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts. I borrowed it from the library following a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] ladyofastolat, and it's absolutely fascinating. Particularly finding out about the St Augustine Gospels - to know that there's a portion of the Bible from over a thousand years ago that still exists and is readable today is quite something.

What was your greatest musical discovery?

Several this year: Globus (recommended track: The Promise), Ivan Torrent (recommended track: Icarus), and Wintergatan (recommended track: Marble Machine).

What did you want and get?

Shiny stuff!

What did you want and not get?

More shiny stuff!

What was your favourite film of this year?

Did I see any films this year? I must have seen something with housegroup, but can't remember what.

What did you do on your birthday?

Visited Amsterdam.

Separately, as a delayed outing for my birthday in 2016 I went with a few friends to Go Ape in Crawley.

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Not being made redundant.

What kept you sane?

Family, friends, housegroup, and a well-stocked MP3 player. The well-stocked MP3 player is very important :)

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy/respect the most?

Pass.

What political issue stirred you the most?

Brexit. Sigh.

Who did you miss?

Oma.

Who was the best new person you met?

More housegroup friends!

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017.

Check all Important Paperwork very carefully. Especially when said Important Paperwork has in theory been updated to correct the errors in it (in practice... it was differently wrong. I was not impressed with the authors of said Important Paperwork).

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

Learning to fly
Touching sky on my way
Learning to fly
High above the sorrows
To a new day I fly

From Stratovarius' Learning to Fly, my all-time favourite song to cheer me up when things have gone pear-shaped.

It's November, which means it's once again time for NaBloPoMo! And time for NaNoWriMo, which one year I might actually attempt.

This year I'll open by finally posting the answers to a Name That Game I posted back in March. This one seems to have stumped everyone - either that, or the usual commenters missed the post or have drifted off to other blogs. Anyway, I'll end the suspense and reveal the source of all the quotes now...

  1. Believe in your strengths... Believe...
Happy Mask Salesman, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  2. Science Team believes the Metroids can be trained. After several cycles of trying, I believe Science Team has vapor for brains.
Space Pirate computer, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
  3. A true gentlemen leaves no puzzle unsolved.
    Hershel Layton, Professor Layton
  4. Farewell, my shadow, you who stand at the end of the path I chose not to follow. I wanted my own world, so I don't regret my choice. I would make the same choice all over again. I will continue to choose this path!
    Lloyd, Tales of Symphonia
  5. There's also a chance, if all goes well, that I might be able to get you back to the place that you came from.
    Atrus, Riven
  6. Faker? I think you're the fake around here. You're comparing yourself to me? Ha. You're not even good enough to be my fake.
I'll make you eat those words!
Shadow and Sonic, Sonic Adventure 2
  7. The Great Mizuti never lies nor tricks. Maybe only sometimes. Rarely. Once in a blue moon.
Mizuti, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
  8. The wind fish in name only, for it is neither.
Owl statue, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  9. Master, that synthetic life-form... There is a 99% chance that it was the pirate described by the captain. I can't help but admire the tenacity it has displayed in staying alive and functional all these years.
Fi, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  10. Lightning brings the cactus pain.
    Now it all begins again.
    Gurdy, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
  11. I am Blockhead! I guard this place so that all shall pass! Er, wait... I mean, none shall pass!
    Blockhead, Ōkami
  12. Agents are... GO!
    Commander Kahn, Elite Beat Agents
  13. Never give up. Trust your instincts!
    James McCloud, Starfox 64
  14. Did you just do what I think you did!? God damnit girl, I just spilt my joe all over the keyboard!
    Mercury, Mirror's Edge
  15. I'll be waiting for you-- every day, in front of Hachiko... till you come back.
Shiki Misaki, The World Ends with You

Perhaps I'll stick with song lyrics for these quizzes?

This is what you get when random inspiration strikes...

  5. Update with the answers in a week or two.
  6. No searching TVTropes for the quotes!

Let's rock and roll!

  2. Science Team believes the Metroids can be trained. After several cycles of trying, I believe Science Team has vapor for brains.
  3. A true gentlemen leaves no puzzle unsolved.

I had an ulterior motive when I posted the answers to Guess the Book yesterday... because I've put together another round of Guess the Movie! I quite enjoy putting these together and picking out the various quotes - some of them are fairly plain, some are downright silly, and some are deeply meaningful.

Guess the Movie Meme, round 6!

To recap, the rules are:

  1. Pick some of your favourite films.
  2. Find a quote from each film.
  3. Post them here for everyone to guess, with comments screened so everyone gets a chance.
  4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it.
  5. Update with the answers in a week or two.
  6. No searching IMDB for the answers.

Onwards and upwards!

  1. My history’s a little hazy Cassius, but shouldn’t the Barbarians lose the battle of Carthage?
  2. You're not invulnerable. I can repair your body, but I can't protect your mind.
  3. Gondor calls for aid!
    And Rohan will answer.
Half-guessed by [livejournal.com profile] olego (right series, wrong film)
  4. I feel lighter. Maybe I lost some weight. All that dilly dallying.
  5. It's a trap!
Half-guessed by [livejournal.com profile] olego (right series, wrong film)
  6. Well, get ready for a 800-foot statue of Pac-Man with Skeletor and Heather Locklear...
  7. Out there is a new world! Out there... is our destiny!
  8. It's a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team. And that means you do everything I say.
  9. I can teach you to fight with the Green Destiny, but first you must learn to hold it in stillness.
  10. Don't touch that! It's my lunch.
  11. Split my infinitives!
  12. Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?
  13. Asante sana Squash banana, Wiwi nugu Mi mi apana!
Enough already! What's that supposed to mean, anyway?
It means you're a baboon... and I'm not.
  14. You can call me anytime. I'll put you on hold, I like to watch the light blink.
  15. What about harbour patrol, radar?
If they have anything that can pick up our jet, they deserve to catch us.

You've had your bonus week and so it's time I posted the answers to round 3 of Guess the Book.

  1. Three million cheers!
Nancy Blackett, Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
  2. I wish you could be happy.
A perilous wish, but some good may come of it.
Jane and the leader of the village women, Greenwitch by Susan Cooper
  3. There's no use trying, one can't believe impossible things.
I daresay you haven't had much practice. When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
Alice and the Red Queen, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  4. Your storm, Thlayli-rah. Use it.
El-ahrairah, Watership Down by Richard Adams
  5. By your leave, Mother, I will stand. The watch is not done.
Rand, The Wheel of Time: The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan
  6. That's a sweet piece. You didn't snatch that off a street.
No. I got it from the neck of the governor's mistress. In the governor's manor. In the governor's bed. With the governor sleeping next to her.
Jean and Locke, Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch
  7. That actually worked? Interesting. My high priest didn't think the squirrel's brain would be capable of following such complicated Commands.
Oh. I mean "Whoops. It completely misunderstood me. Stupid squirrel."
Lightsong the Brave, Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
  8. You have been told to mind you manners, Page Nealan. I will have an apology for your insolence.
An apology for general insolence, your lordship, or some particular offense?
Lord Wyldon and Neal, First Test by Tamora Pierce
  9. And did the mouse squeak under your pillow, and the china dogs bark?
Mrs. Oldknow, The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy M. Boston
  10. He’s wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.
Mr. Beaver, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis
And the winner is... well, there is no winner as apparently this quiz defeated everyone. Or perhaps audience participation is merely down on past years?

Comments are still open on the Guess the Movie Meme, and I know that at least two of you know where one quote is from... so I'm going to be mean and not post the answers yet :)
