Well, another year, another November of trying to think of some random insanity to post every day. This year was less successful that past ones, in that I completely forgot about an update on the 8th and then again on the 22nd. But on the other hand, this will be post 31 of a 30-day month so I have averaged slightly more than 1 post per day, albeit with a lot of filler (and yes, I'm fully aware that this is also a filler post). Then again in 2013 I managed 40 posts, so even with the extra post this is still below average for NaBloPoMo.

Anyway, this is the point at which this blog normally rapidly descends back into radio silence for another year - each year I mean to keep the posting frequency up after NaBloPoMo, and each year I fail. Except for 2016 when I kept it going for most of December with daily advent blogs - who knows, that might happen again this year after

elemnar and I exchange advent calendars...

So, in the interests of not failing twice in a row, let's unleash the traditional Stat-o-matic and post something more substantial (lest I summon the snark of talismancer...). The code needed a minor tweak this year to generate https urls for the graphics, otherwise it's the same as last year. It's nice when a bit of code just quietly continues working like that.

Strangely, this journal is down 6 comments and 1 user over last year. A check of the raw data shows there were actually 10 new comments so the changes are probably from deleted comments - sometimes when going over old posts I find spam comments, so that could be it. Unsurprisingly there's been little movement in the top ten - jecook has swapped places with Anonymous, who lost a comment (probably the aforementioned spam).

Hmm... I wonder if I could put together something similar for Facebook...

It's somewhat ironic - I had so many plans of varying degrees of cunningness for NaBloPoMo, and in the end hardly used any of them. Disregarding the traditional filler posts (Guy Fawkes, Remembrance Day, the LJ Comments Meme, and the obligatory poll) I only made two Zelda blogs, scanned one film, and didn't dissect a single Magic deck. Admittedly some days were easier than others - Monday is always good for a pasta night gaming blog, and Wednesday provides the odd bit of bible study from housegroup - and there was a fair amount of last-minute filler and ramblings to bump up the post count (and a handful of fudged timestamps). But still, this seems like one of my more successful NaBloPoMo months.

The question now, as always, is will this blog descend back into radio silence for December or will I somehow manage to keep up some level of blogging? There does seem to be a cyclical effect where NaBloPoMo gets me blogging again, but it then quickly fades off and by the next summer the posts are few and far between. Perhaps I should try and do a regular schedule of posts (say Tuesday gets a Zelda update, Magic happens on Wednesday, Friday becomes Film Friday, ...)? I don't intend to repeat last year's daily advent calendar posts, though tea miniblogs may become a thing (I have seen my advent calendar from

elemnar and it is intriguing...) and I really ought to blog more snippets of real life randomness. I sit on potential posts for far too long and then they just don't happen.

There's been a little more activity than last year with another 28 comments received. No single user stands out as being particularly chatty however (with the exception of anonymous users, who have conspired together to boot mirrordreams out of the top 10). It's still massively down from the heyday of LiveJournal - a quick calculation shows that this blog has averaged 145-odd comments a year, so given how quiet it is now there must have been a few very comment-heavy years. Perhaps I should have a go at graphing the comments against time?

I really ought to polish this off and post it on Github or somewhere. I've slightly tweaked it since last time: the base LJ stylesheet includes an unhelpful "height: auto !important" style on IMG tags which breaks the fancy bar graph. The Stat-o-matic now retaliates with its own CSS sledgehammer (now with valid CSS)!

Compared to last year there's been very little change - two pairs in the top 10 have swapped position (

ralesk and

tau_iota_mu_c, Anonymous and

mirrordreams), but in both cases only because one person in the pair has posted any comments.

As a minor aside, it took me only a couple of minutes to download the 150MB zip file for Eclipse, and maybe half that to extract it (then five minutes spent trying to work out why it wasn't starting - it'd help if the 64-bit package actually used the 64-bit Java runtime...). Back when I started university doing the same took much longer - Internet access wasn't anywhere near as fast, and both processors and disks were much slower. Modern computing is fast.

Interestingly my 7-year-old desktop is actually more responsive than the shiny new Lenovo T440 laptop $WORK has allocated. The laptop has a high-end Core i-something-or-other (probably an i5, probably 3GHz, definitely 8 cores), 8GB of RAM, and plenty of disk space. Nyx, the desktop, has an old Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz and only 4 cores), a mere 4GB RAM... and a crazy fast Plextor M5S SSD. It's no contest, really.

There's been a little movement in the rankings: dootsie has disappeared off the top ten to be replaced by omgimsuchadork, and some commenters have swapped places (ralesk and pewterfish, along with mirrordreams and talismancer). Of course, olego is still in his rightful place at #2.

My LJ Stat-o-matic has also had some work and now generates logarithmic graphs. I think mine's still not quite the same as whatever algorithm scrapdog's original wizard uses, but I think it looks better than the previous linear graphs. Source is available to anyone who asks for it :)

Credit where credit's due: scrapdog's original LJ Comment wizard is the inspiration for the tool and the result formatting, although I've ended up with a different calculation for the bars (his looks logarithmic, but I couldn't be bothered to do that and just made mine linear).

The other major difference with my stats is that I've excluded deleted and screened comments from the results. This has demoted Anonymous to #9 and restored olego to his rightful place at #2.

Source code is available if you want to run it yourself, but be warned - as said above, it was thrown together rather quickly over a couple of hours and doesn't contain a single comment!

Well, copying and pasting this month's entries from ljArchive into Word gives a shade under four thousand words. Hmm. Then again, there's a lot of variation in this: the shortest entry was a single word, while the longest is 816 words. I think talismancer has been more consistent than me with entry length.
