The Guardian Stalkers are not small enemies...

Yes, it's another Amiibo! The Breath of the Wild series are very hard to find from first-party sellers, but the other day I was putting together an Amazon order and had a look on the off chance - and spotted this one available for a non-insane price (still a bit more than retail, but not the 100%+ markup that most sellers have).

I have a Metroid amiibo! It is squishy and I will call it squish!

Metroid: Third Derivative #64

And of course Samus will take potshots at it, because Metroid.

So what was yesterday's construction kit?

A Nanoblock Santa! That was fairly straightforward to construct, albeit with some care needed as a few parts are only held together through a single stud (the hat, presents and satchel). So let's try for something more complex...

Merry Christmas!

I got given a frankly silly number of constructions kits this year - even more than in 2016 (and I never did get round to building all of those) - so here's kit number 1. Can you guess what it is?

I finally finished another one of the many construction kits I received last Christmas...

It's Megatron!

Oh, and the spider-robot was also completed ages ago (though I never did get round to repacking the video for Youtube - and now they've dropped support for side-by-side 3D videos, so it looks like I'll have to re-encode it myself anyway), along with the mystery gears (although that needs a fair bit of tuning before it will work properly). That leaves I think just one kit from 2016 still to construct!

Random inspiration struck again, and this time I remembered that Kid Icarus: Uprising has an AR mode in it (along with support for just about every other feature of the 3DS - if nothing else, it's an excellent tech demo). So after a few minutes of experimentation here's a photo of Pit, balanced on the palm of my hand and gazing out across the creek. Who says angels aren't real?

I've got another construction kit (I got given four at Christmas)! Can you guess what it is?

A bit of experimentation later...

Turns out that an A4-sized AR card is exactly the right size to let Link to grab hold of the sword!

The previous one has been built, but needs a bit of fine tuning. And then I need to work out how to get video from the 3DS to Youtube in a sensible fashion. Which unfortunately I think means re-encoding the video (with resulting generational loss) if I want it in 3D - the 3DS generates 3D video as two separate streams, but Youtube expects a single stream containing the left and right images side-by-side. Hmm. I wonder if I can be clever and recombine the streams without re-encoding, given that the 3DS uses MJPEG?

Merry Christmas!

I have a construction kit! Well, actually I have several construction kits, but this is the one I'm building at the moment. Can you guess what it is?

This afternoon I went for another stroll through the hidden field to the north of Fareham - it makes for a nice walk, and I sometimes detour through it on the way to Sainsbury's. Since the last set of photos the grass in the first part especially has really grown, and at times the path was hidden between grass stalks taller than I am!

Anyway, here's a random set of photos from there, once again taken with the 3DS:

Because what is the Internet for, if not for cat photos?

Today's random set of photos on a gloriously sunny afternoon (with the sort of light where everything looks just that little bit more bright and colourful) are from the well-hidden paths round the back of Fareham that I first discovered during last year's attempt at this. It's an unusual green space, wedged in between a housing estate to the southwest, the M27 to the north, and an industrial estate to the east.

For a change (and because I forgot to bring the Panasonic), these are all taken with the 3DS and hence are all 3D photos. For the best view, pull up this page in the 3DS' built-in browser and then tap the photos to open them on the top screen.

What to have at the end of a long driving lesson (write-up to follow):

As an aside, because getting photos off of the 3DS is such a kerfuffle (exit game, switch off 3DS, remove memory card and stick in card reader, find .JPG, find corresponding .MPO, persuade Semagic to use the .MPO) I bashed out a noddy little file browser/uploader to stick on the NAS. The Internet is full of all-singing, all-dancing PHP file managers but seems to have a lack of simple little ones that just give a file list and an upload box. All in all, it took me under an hour using nothing more than notepad to write 80-odd lines of PHP that can display a file list, browse and create subdirectories, and upload files.

Edit: fixed unclosed <LABEL> tag and added HTML 5 doctype.

The script itself )

It's been quite some time since I just sat down and bashed out a little program like that for myself. I hadn't realised quite how much I'd missed that sort of quick coding to make things just that little bit more convenient to use.
