Riddle me this...

Why is it that the UK Kindle store contains French and German editions of some books, but not the original English printing of the same?

Go on. Search for "Star Wars X-wing", or "Tamora Pierce", to give a couple of examples. For added fun try to work out why the second search is showing books that don't appear to have any link to the words "Tamora Pierce".

Semi-related riddle: why is there no "sort alphabetically" option? "Relevance" may as well be called "random" for all the use it is.

My Kindle has an interesting interpretation of "sort by author":

So I thought I'd dig out my Kindle and see if anything catches my eye in the store on it... only to be told that "A Wi-Fi connection is required to complete this task". One would have thought that it would remember the details of my wireless network, but apparently not.

It did show my network in the list, so I told it to connect. It thought about things for a few moments, then declared that the password I had entered was incorrect or invalid. Now, I've not touched my network setup for a while now so whatever password it had saved should have worked, but again apparently not. So I dug out the passphrase, entered it in, hit submit... and after a few moments it decided that not only was the password invalid, but my wireless network no longer existed either. And no matter how much I pounded refresh, it was now convinced that my network was a figment of my imagination.

Funnily enough, the computer that I'm typing this post on works perfectly well using that non-existent network.

Eventually I got it to connect, after switching airplane mode on and off several times in the hope that this would actually make the wifi module start behaving.

Oh, cool, Amazon has updated the Kindle firmware.

It would have been nice if they'd asked before installing the update... and if after updating, it remembered which book I was reading rather than taking me straight to the home page.

Still, at least it now lets me shrink the line spacing and the font so I get a sensible amount of text on each page. Now all that's missing for the reader is hyphenation support.

Somewhere within the depths of Amazon is a RSS client made of several kinds of fail, judging by the logs on a server I admin.

Today's annoyance was managing to crash my Kindle. I turned it on, paged forward, paged forward again, and then wondered why it was still showing the same page as before. Still, at least there is a reset function - holding the power button down for 20 seconds did the trick.

It's not the only bit of embedded kit to hang on me recently. The other day the Wii failed to power up from standby and also needed a reset. Any bets on what will crash next?
