Pancakes!

Since people have been prodding me for an update, here's a pancake-themed one (as everyone's blogging about pancakes today!).

Unlike in the linked blog, I made crepe-style ones following a Delia Smith recipe I stumbled across years ago. It's nice and simple, and halving the ingredients works well and made about 4-and-a-half pancakes in a large frying pan.

Y'know, there is a wonderful side-effect of all the mass panic over GDPR. Whenever I visit a website only to have a full-screen GDPR consent window pop up, I know that the site's unlikely to actually be useful and so to not bother with it. Especially when there's no obvious "opt-out" button and instead the site presents you with a list of a bajillion different categories and cookies to individually deselect.

This brought to you by searching for recipes and finding that most sites contain more ads than recipe ingredients. So I gave up on trying to find new sites and just stuck with the BBC Food site. Who'd have thought that not stuffing every page with obnoxious ads might actually gain you more users?

Church arranges an occasional social meal out - I went to tonight's, which was at the Avenue 141 restaurant at Fareham College. It's a budget upmarket restaurant (fine dining by trainee staff) and had a very yummy meal...

[livejournal.com profile] elemnar: That is a good way to declare summer has arrived!
[livejournal.com profile] elemnar: What's in the pot to the left of the tea?
[livejournal.com profile] boggyb: more tea :)
[livejournal.com profile] elemnar: Haha, of course!

For the scones I used a BBC food recipe, halved the ingredients as it's just me, and glazed them with milk as I don't have any eggs. They actually came out very well which was a pleasant surprise as this is the first time I've tried baking scones in ages.

The whipped cream (not butter, despite the phone's camera) was less successful - I'm not entirely convinced the shake-to-make-whipped-cream thing actually achieves whipped cream. It came out a bit like it was heading towards whipped cream (it was fluffier than the double cream I started with) but hadn't quite got there.

I may have misjudged things slightly...

Today's random discovery is that while a Kopparberg mixed fruits cider is a bad idea for making a gravy/sauce/whatever for the pork medallion recipe I posted last year, the Kopparberg cloudberry one that I picked up out of curiosity (what is a cloudberry, anyway?) works rather well. Especially with a decent dollop of clotted cream.

Come to think of it I've still got some cream left, along with a couple of apples and half a bag of crumble mix. Mmmm... apple crumble...

Another slightly delayed set of photos!

Proof that I do actually cook for myself :) )

Today's discovery: when a recipe says it makes 18 very large cookies, it apparently means very large. Much larger than the photo on that page would suggest.

Since it's just me here I reduced the ingredients to a third and had a go at baking it... and yet somehow I still achieved a dozen merely largeish cookies. Um.

There does seem to be something of a lack of recipes for small batches of not-crazy-large cookies. Anyone have any ideas?
