There should be a required reading list for the internet. It'd be a better place if more people took the time to read RFC 1855 - Netiquette Guidelines. And an exam based on it (with bonus marks for originality and BOFH-ness, of course).

agreed, and people should be banned from using shorthand in txts (deliberate) and phone companies should extend the 160 char limit

I have to disagree over the shorthand in txts - if your phone doesn't have decent predictive test, then it's a right pain to send a long message with proper grammer and formatting.

Extending the 160-char limit is also unlikely, as there's too much old equipment around. GSM was designed to last, and it's relatively unchanged since it's first introduction. There's been various extensions, like MMS, but that's about it unless you go for 3G and use a full-size keyboard for writing text messages.

perhaps they should introduce voice typing, and old phones pick up as multiple messages

Okay, you design a fool-proof voice recog system that will work with anything from no noise to the sound of a plane taking off, with 100% accuracy and no training.

I used to hate T9 and I always typed words correctly and somehow I always ended up with precisely 160 characters.
