Things you don't expect to happen: a smoke alarm to continue going "BIP!" after you've removed the battery from it.

Everything here apparently runs on pixie dust...

We had this recently. It turned out there were two additional smoke alarms in this flat we'd hitherto not noticed... ONE of the three was out of juice, and vociferous about it. Of course, it was the best hidden, and easiest to reach.

Some alarms are also wired into the mains, with the battery theoretically just for backup (it still eventually runs down though).

That's the case with the smoke alarms here. It also means that when you burn the toast, *all* the alarms go off. And there's no "It's only the toast!" button on them.

Curiously the smoke alarm (actually a heat alarm) I had down had a sticker stating "This heat alarm will not operate without a working battery".
