[livejournal.com profile] boggyb is WEAK against broken hard disk controller drivers.

The onboard Intel ICH9R SATA chipset has started randomly failing and bluescreening with STOP 0x8086 (obviously some Intel engineer has a sense of humour), while the Highpoint HPT3xx IDE card does Not like restoring from hibernation (and for good measure doesn't support SMART). The motherboard BIOS is also broken, such that if I set the Intel to RAID mode I then need to clear the CMOS to be able to get back into the BIOS, let alone boot the system.

On the plus side, the computer is a lot quieter now that I've finally got round to removing the dud IBM drive (death due to unbalanced platters/dead bearings).
