The Mission (part 4)
May. 4th, 2004 10:00 pmYou may want to read the first, second and third parts of this growing saga first to catch up with the plot. For those of you who may be wondering, this is based loosely on AS-Mazon (Mazon Fortress, a UT assault map). And now, let us read on...
Xan had been worried. Normally the attackers (or what's left of them) would be huddling back at their base, licking their wounds and planning their next attack. Instead, he had to contend with the very real possibility that the ancient Mazon fortress he'd moved into was about to fall. The various red lights on the control panel were not a comforting sign.
Another bank of lights flicked red, and the cameras automatically switched to the source. The door to the power room had been opened, and all that was left was the containment field. Any decent weapon would make short work of that, and then the crystal that powered this fortress would be destroyed. Xan could not let that happen.
Fortunately, he had been preparing for such a time as this, ever worried that his goons might stage an uprising of their own. He reached over, and touched an apparently empty part of his console. A panel slid aside, revealing a row of shielded keys. Slowly, methodically, he flicked the shield up on each one in turn, and depressed the button...
A loud whirring sound alerted Boggy B to the plasma cannons in the power room, as they emerged from their slumber. He stared at them for a moment, and then realised what was about to happen as the rising whine of a charging capacitor bank permeated the room.
The lethal anti-mater bursts of the cannons tore up the floor behind Boggy has he sprinted for the relative safety of the doorway, only to see the blast shield slam down. He was cut off, and being pursued by the blasts of a pair of psychotic robot sentry turrets.
As he ran desperately in search of cover, Xan's mechanical voice echoed around the room. "You have done well to get this far. Indeed, you are the only person who has successfully gained entry to my fortress. However, it is far from over. You still have to face me, and prove your worth."
With that a part of the floor irised open, and the giant crystal that powered the fortress began to descend into a subterranean room. The plasma cannons momentarily faltered, as the base switched to a temporary backup supply, and this gave Boggy the opportunity he needed. Dodging the more sporadic blasts, he levelled his ASMD shock rifle at the cannon, and let loose. The bright azure beam of the rifle lanced into the heart of the cannon, reacted catastrophically with the anti-matter contained within, and annihilated the cannon. Repeating the trick with the other cannon, he heard a grinding noise as the floor began to close again. He quickly somersaulted through the open hole...
Deep inside the bowels of the fortress, Xan chuckled. "Foolish one. Now you will have to be destroyed..."
