torkellWell, I've tried the graphics drivers, and after several attempts at installing them and threats with a screwdriver (I think I need to make a new blood sacrifice to this computer soon, it's starting to get restless) which ended with me going on a search and destroy mission through the registry to prune the last remains of the Creative drivers, as well as some nVidia stuff, it seems to have worked.
And I can finally play full-screen games *without* it locking up on me with the latest drivers.
In other news, there's decidedly less hardware in the case now. The sound card has gone, as well as the ISA modem (I'm now using an external one, Because I Can™), leaving a graphics card, generic network card and an IDE controller. I also added a parallel port card (there was a time when I was using two parallel ports), mainly because I only had one spare blanking plate. But it's a dumb card, of the sort which has discrete logic chips, and so it's doing nothing more than taking up a few I/O ports that nothing should be using.
There's still three hard disks, a CD burner, a DVD burner, 3 sticks of ram and several IDE cables trying to escape, but those seem to be behaving themselves. Just goes to show - computer stuff *is* sentinent, and it *is* possible to threaten it (oddly enough though, every IBM system I've used has Just Worked™ without threats. It's only the home-built ones that are *really* determined to annoy you). If you don't believe me, just ask the innards of a floppy disk that's stuck up on the pinboard. It refused to work, and so had a public execution (got taken apart within view of the box of floppies) :P
