Not amazingly at all. Recaptcha puts two answers up, a known answer (one it has confidence in) and an unknown (sometimes it will show two known - especially if one of the knowns has a low confidence value).

When it collects a known number of answers to the unknown with a high enough confidence value, the unknown is accepted as known, and the cycle begins all over again.

As an exercise to the reader: identify the known and unknown in the recaptcha above :-)

I've noticed recently that one word is usually printed without any distortion. Presumably the undistorted one is the unknown word in the captcha, though most of the time both words are almost indecipherable and not ones I've ever come across before (try googling "mplatfy").
