Funny you should say that, another email from $name dropped into my inbox at the same time as your comment. And now we discover that $name has actually tried using the link and that it apparently doesn't work. Except my test account (the one that I subscribed and then unsubscribed via the link in the footer) hasn't received a copy of that email. Either there's a bug somewhere in the system, or $name has failed to fully follow the instructions (unsubscribing requires you to click a confirmation link in an email).

True, the comittee could have been more helpful... but so could have $name. If the initial email had gone something like "Could you remove me please? I've tried the unsubscribe link but it didn't work" then it would be clear where the problem is. As it stands (and given that the system is at least partially working), it looked like someone who couldn't be bothered to use the unsubscribe link.
