It's one of those dark and stormy nights round here, with the sort of persistent drizzle that soaks you to the bone... not that that's stopped the local firework displays (I counted at least three that I could see from my balcony, a fourth illuminating the clouds, and at least one more that I could hear but not see).

Speaking of fireworks and bonfires, Lewes have a rather bizarre collection of effigies to burninate this year including:

• The Pope
  
• FIFA president Sepp Blatter
  
• Jeremy Clarkson
  
• the world's biggest Guy
  
• ...and a nearly-naked David Cameron with a pig's head
  

The Lewes bonfire societies certainly don't shy away from controversy.

Oh yes, and I found out what happened to the Alex Salmond effigies from last year. They were withdrawn from the parade so as not to offend the sensibilities of the SNP... and then at least one was stuffed full of fireworks and blown up anyway.
