11:53pm is not really when you want to hear the faint "bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee-bee" of someone else's smoke alarm. Since it's only intermittently sounding and seems to have now stopped, I'm going to guess that a neighbour is failing at making toast (I assume in an actual fire the smoke alarm wouldn't shut up after a few seconds).
