Has the internet completely forgotten about efficient use of bandwidth?

yes. People look at me like I've grown another head when I talk about sites I(or other people) build being efficient. I think it's because the majority of people are now on broadband and downloading a large amount of data isn't a big problem. As a result, designers are now making sites that are bulky and pretty, but not practical. But I still think it's an issue that will get worse with time, like Microsoft's bloatware.

There's a Firefox plugin called "View Dependencies" that I use when troubleshooting sites that tell me how much content is actually being loaded when i load a page. Some pages range up to the hundreds of megs range. My response to them is "no WONDER your site takes a long time to load! Do you have any idea how much data you're telling their browser to get from your site?"

I'm sure it happens in other areas of the web. I'm just writing about what I know.

I would postulate that it's not just the internet but everything in general these days. From software engineering up to natural resources.
