Today's (well, yesterday's by now) achievements: wiring up downstairs for TV and networking.

Today's failures: managing to wire both notwork runs as crossover sockets, and failing at one coax plug and one coax socket. For someone who's never wired coax before, I feel that's reasonably good. The notwork failure I have no excuse for, and I have been duly larted by pewterfish. Also choros has lost a couple of freeview channels as a result of the wiring, so I will probably spend a day next weekend staring at the wiring in an attempt to glare it into submission, then redoing the plugs when that fails. The cheap plastic plugs apparently a) don't bother with shield continuity, and b) are slightly too small for the proper TV cable that's used on that link, so I'll get a pair of metal ones and see if that improves things. Memo to self: high-quality plugs are worth it (one of the earlier failures was due to lack of grounding). Seriously, Will, if I've not done anything about it by this time next week then poke me, preferably with something that's not sharp.

+1. When I'm making Coax terminations, I use compression connectors similar to these.

They are *not* cheap (nor is the tool which last I knew ran about $60 US), but once I put them on, they don't go anywhere and they are dead reliable.
