I've always surfed with ads on - after all, someone has to pay for the hosting - but I think it's time to find a decent ad blocker and nerf all the flash video ads.
A few months ago I ran without Flash for a bit, and browsing was noticeably faster.
I've never subscribed to the view that I'm obliged to wade through ads for things I will never buy, when I could be using my time, attention and bandwidth for more useful things.
If I want to buy something, I will track down an ad or seller. Push advertising simply does not get money or anything else from me, in any format (electronic or not), so why waste an advertiser's server bandwidth and CPU, plus my own resources, for a null result?
If sites really want to find a way to block me out if I don't download their ads, they're welcome to spend their time and money finding a way to do so. Oddly, no-one really seems to do that for long, though - apparently most marketing divisions eventually realise that there are word-of-mouth backlashes when they block the 2% of people internet-savvy enough to use adblockers. Some sites are still recovering years after paywall fiascos. Better to just slap the ads up there for the 98% of Joe Sixpacks and Grandma Clicky-Everythings and turn a blind eye to the rest.
