I would post a photo of what caused our power outage on Monday, but I didn't take one.
A crane fell through the 22kV just outside our building while lifting an air conditioning unit up a hill. The local paper got there before the energy crews did. So now the local paper have a prominent photo on the second page with a crane with the words: sǝuɐɹↃ ɥɐpǝuun⅁[1] advertising just how competant they are. (Good news is the driver didn't autodarwinate himself)
[1] ok, so that's a slight exageration, but wikipaedia tells me it's harder to find a sideways translation
I think that wins the "fail + volts = bang" award (the instance of fail at university a few years ago fortuantly did not result in bang, because the guy stopped the angle grinder in time. Instead that turned into a discovery by the administration that diesel generators apparently need diesel to work).
As it happens, there was a crane fall round here recently. The guy was lifting boats into the water, and current guess is that an outrigger lost its hydraulics. Result: one half-submerged crane, one written-off yacht.
