Hmmm.
A while back, I wrote about how I was peeved with a certain bit of copy-protection and the effects it was having on my CD-writer. It now looks like I was wrong about that - the driver (one SecDrv.sys) has been removed and the problem still exists. Furthermore, my DVD/CD combo writer (everything bar DVD-RAM) is unaffected.
I shall have to keep digging on this one.
